The other day I stood in line to check out at my veterinary clinic and inwardly cringed when I overheard the conversation in front of me. A lady was trying to corral her exuberant puppy, who was lunging and barking playfully at my dog, while asking the receptionist about dog trainers. There Was Just One Problem . . .

Not with the pie, of course. It was perfect. The problem is that I’m human and I make mistakes.

My first mistake was leaving the pie to cool on the counter while I went to take a shower and get ready for this much-anticipated date.

The second mistake was leaving my dog, Karma, unattended while she had access to the kitchen and said pie.
