You Still Don't Know Sit, Part 3: Why Won't You Sit?

Welcome to part three of my series on one of the first, and most common, cues taught to dogs – “sit”. In part 1 I touched on the amazing Default Sit. In part 2 I went over the ABC’s of putting this useful behavior on cue. Now let’s delve into why a dog won’t sit. There are lots of reasons, so take a seat – this may take a while!

Medical maladies

Several years ago, I adopted a Catahoula Leopard Dog mix puppy and named her Pele. She was the calmest puppy I’d ever met. She never raced around the yard or had “the zoomies” in the house. She never jumped on guests and was generally content to lie on her dog bed and chew her toys. While training her, I noticed she was reluctant to sit. A trip to the vet revealed she had severe hip dysplasia. She was just 7 months old. Surgery helped ease her pain and she went on to become an AKC Canine Good Citizen and Search and Rescue dog. After her diagnosis, I was able to see that she hadn’t raced around and played like a normal puppy because she hurt too much. It made me look at dogs who were reluctant to sit in an all-new light.
